Clear Lens Extraction (CLE) or as it is also known Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a surgical procedure used to correct vision problems. It is often used as an alternative treatment to Laser Eye Surgery.
CLE/RLE Surgery is used to treat Cataracts by replacing the diseased or cloudy lens of the eye with a clear synthetic alternative called an Intra-Ocular Lens (IOL).

What does Clear Lens Extraction involve?
Clear Lens Extraction or Refractive Lens Exchange (CLE/RLE) can be performed by removing the cataract or cloudy lens and then inserting a synthetic replacement or by placing the corrective synthetic lens over the top of the cataract.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic and is completed on an outpatient basis. CLE/RLE Surgery involves a small incision being made to remove the cataract; this incision heals rapidly with vision often settling within 2 days. Once the incision has been made the synthetic lens is inserted.
The Refractive Clear Lens Extraction Surgery takes approximately 30 minutes to perform on each eye.
